Danish director wins IDFA 2022

The award, along with a check for 15,000 euros, was presented to the winner on Thursday evening at a ceremony held at the International Theater in Amsterdam. The documentary film follows the young artist and painter Apollonia Sokol over a period of 13 years. The jury members, who included filmmaker Pierre Honkasalo, Vanja Kalogercic, director of the Rotterdam Film Festival, Egyptian writer Yossary Nasrallah, director and editor Mary Stephan, and festival critic and planner Yoshi Yatabeh, said: “This film is full of love and has characters who breathe and take us on a journey, taking us into the world of culture and art, business and politics, and the mechanisms of a success story”

The €۵,۰۰۰ IDF award for best director went to British filmmaker Simon Chambers for Much Ado About Nothing, a film about the final months of the director’s Shakespeare-loving uncle David. The €۲,۵۰۰ editing award went to Mario Steenburgen for Journey in Our World, which was shot during the pandemic in the director’s home and backyard. The film also won the award for best Dutch film

The IDF award for best cinematography went to Paul Guilhem for Paradise. In the Envision category, the best film award, with a €۱۵,۰۰۰ check, went to Angie Vencitto for Manifesto, a collection of extreme video shots taken by Russian teenagers and posted on social media. In this section, the Best Director award worth 5,000 euros was awarded to Roberta Torre for “The Extraordinary.” British director Darren Emerson also won the “IDFA Doc Lab” award for the film “All-encompassing Nonfiction,” a film about 1980s culture.
