Shanghai Film Festival Winners Announced

The Grand Jury Prize was shared between two films

“On the Sands of Summer,” by Shinya Tamada from Japan, a gentle story about a broken man (played by Japanese star Joe Odigiri) who finds hope again when his niece arrives; and “Wild Nights, Tame Animals,” by Wang Tong from China, an innovative thriller that the jury said marked the emergence of an important voice in Chinese cinema

The Best Actor award went to José Martinez, the Portuguese star of the Portuguese-Brazilian film “Scent of Memories,” directed by Antonio Ferreira. He plays a racist old man tormented by memories of war

Renowned Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore was an inspired choice to head the jury. The special screening of Cinema Paradiso was one of 600 screenings that sold out within an hour of going on sale

“I hope the films I see really surprise and enchant me,” Tornatore said at the festival’s opening, and at the end, he gave a masterclass to encourage young people to watch more films in cinema”

Elsewhere, Cao Baoping won best director for his thrilling comedy “Crazy Summer.” Qiu Sheng also won the artistic achievement award for his drama about artificial intelligence “My Father’s Son

In the Asian New Talent category, Binh Xu won the top prize for his historical thriller “The Water That Flows,” which was praised by Chinese critics
